This is/will probably be the most fulfilling, liberating painting I will ever do. “Return to Sender”. 48” x 36” acrylic on canvas and wood. Some won’t understand, some will, some will be offended, some will learn. But as for me, it’s about rejecting one narrative and retaking control of another. It is a remake of Carl Bloch’s “Sermon on the Mount” from 1877. Whether black folks believe it or not, they know his work very well from the church fans and prints of Jesus that hung at granny’s house. There are so many items of symbolism in this. It’s moments like this that make it so gratifying to be an artist. I was asked by @houstonmaac to create a portrait to pay tribute to Mr. Robbie Tolan and his family. If you don’t know Robbie’s story please look it up and educate yourself. He is a survivor of an unjust act in 2008, being shot by police who falsely claimed he had stolen the car he and his cousin were in (his own car) in his parents driveway. Today I was honored to unveil the work that will hang alongside paintings of George Floyd and Sandra Bland at HMAAC. Few words can explain when an artist presents work that the viewer has emotional investments. I pray that this contribution will bring happiness, play a small part in the family’s continued healing, and continue to educate our culture and society about an issue that we have dealt with FAR too long. The amount of LOVE that I felt from this beautiful family was SO amazing. @robbie_tolan Thank you.

I couldn’t wait to finish this, so here it is. I think I’m calling it B.O.B (Bet On Black…There’s an urban homage to Bob Ross in this painting as well). I’ve forever been fascinated with clouds and lately have been seeing the beauty of power lines against those beautiful clouds. I wish as a culture we can look up more often and recognize the power that we have when we work together, support one another and pool our resources. As a black community we need to shift our focus from the small material things and focus on the greater goals that lead to wealth FOR US. Politician and companies always bet on us to pull through and we do, but for THEIR gain.
